Calcium formate is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water and has a low solubility of around 160 g/l at 20 °C . It is predominantly used as a hydration accelerator for cement, introduced in the 1970s, and is used to counteract the retarding effect of water-reducing admixtures . Calcium formate can enhance the formation of ettringite and AFm phases and accelerate the hydration of C3S . It is usually added as a powder, which might create dispersing problems .
In the LBM-H2O system, calcium formate inhibits the hydration and setting of LBM, but in the Cement-LBM-H2O system, it accelerates the hydration of LBM and increases its expansion efficiency . The acceleration effect of calcium formate is attributed to its adsorption on the cement surface, which first accelerates the hydration of the cement phase and then releases OH− to accelerate the hydration of MgO .
Calcium formate can also be used to increase the strength of ternary cement composites containing fly ash and slag . It has been reported to decrease the initial and final setting time of an OPC paste by approximately 30% at a dosage of 0.75% of cement weight and accelerates the development of compressive strength in OPC pastes and mortars .
