Flutamide is a nonsteroidal antiandrogen medication primarily used in the treatment of prostate cancer. It functions by competitively inhibiting the androgen receptor, thereby blocking the effects of androgens, which are known to stimulate the growth of prostate cancer cells.
Flutamide works by binding to androgen receptors in target tissues, such as the prostate gland, and inhibits the uptake and nuclear binding of androgens. This action counteracts the effect of androgens, which are necessary for the growth of certain prostate cancers.
Flutamide is indicated for the management of locally confined Stage B2-C and Stage D2 metastatic carcinoma of the prostate. It is often used in combination with a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analog to treat prostate cancer.
The typical adult dosage for prostate cancer is 250 mg orally every 8 hours, to be taken with or without food.
Common side effects may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, hot flashes, and sexual dysfunction. More serious side effects can include liver damage, which may be indicated by symptoms such as upper stomach pain, itching, tiredness, dark urine, clay-colored stools, or jaundice.
