  • Appearance: Dark purple to bronze crystalline powder with a metallic sheen

  • Solubility:

    • Highly soluble in water (18.7 g/100 mL at 21°C) 

    • Soluble in ethanol (1.5 g/100 mL), glycerol, and propylene glycol 

  • Color Characteristics:

    • Neutral pH: Bright blue (λmax = 625 nm) 

    • Acidic conditions: Green to yellow 

    • Alkaline conditions: Purple (when boiled) 

  • Stability: Resistant to heat, light, and pH changes (except strong acids/bases) 

 

Production Methods

  1. Synthesis Process:

    • Condensation of benzaldehyde-2-sulfonic acid with N-ethyl-N-(3-sulfobenzyl)aniline 

    • Oxidation with sodium dichromate or lead dioxide 

  2. Aluminum Lake Form (Insoluble Pigment):

    • Prepared by precipitating Brilliant Blue with aluminum hydroxide 

 

Applications

1. Food Industry

  • Common Uses:

    • Beverages (juices, sodas), candies, ice cream, baked goods 

    • Often blended with Tartrazine (Yellow 5) to produce green shades 

  • Regulatory Limits (China, GB 2760):

    • 0.025 g/kg in beverages, candies, ice cream 

    • 0.10 g/kg in red/green decorative strips
