Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC)

Chemical Name: Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose
CAS No.: 9004-32-4
Synonyms: CMC sodium salt, Carboxymethylcellulose sodium, Cellulose gum

Properties

  • Appearance: White to off-white fibrous or granular powder, odorless, and hygroscopic
    Solubility: Highly dispersible in water (forms a transparent colloidal solution), insoluble in organic solvents like ethanol, acetone, and ether

  • pH Stability: Optimal viscosity at pH 7; unstable in strong acids (pH < 5) or bases (pH > 10)

  • Thermal Stability: Viscosity decreases at high temperatures (>80°C)

Production Methods

  1. Water-Mediated Process: Cellulose is treated with NaOH to form alkali cellulose, then reacted with chloroacetic acid

  2. Solvent Process: Uses isopropanol/ethanol as a medium for etherification

Applications

  • Food Industry: Thickener, stabilizer, and emulsifier in ice cream, sauces, and beverages (max. 5g/kg in instant noodles)

  • Pharmaceuticals: Tablet binder, disintegrant, and suspending agent in syrups
