Copper methionine is a compound that combines the essential trace element copper with the amino acid methionine. This chelated form of copper is believed to enhance the absorption and bioavailability of copper in the body, which is crucial for various physiological functions, including the synthesis of red blood cells, maintenance of nerve function, bone growth, and the utilization of sugars .
Methionine (MET) is an essential α-amino acid that plays a role in several biochemical processes, such as the biosynthesis of proteins. L-Methionine labeled with 11C is used as a positron emission tomography (PET) tracer, particularly in the detection of brain tumors. Normal brain tissue primarily recognizes glucose as a metabolic substrate, resulting in very low physiological 11C-methionine uptake. In contrast, tumoral brain tissues exhibit increased 11C-methionine uptake, providing a high signal-to-noise ratio that aids in the interpretation of PET scans. The procedure is relatively quick, with an intravenous injection of 370-740 MBq of tracer and an uptake time of 10 to 30 minutes, given the short half-life of 11C-labeled molecules (20 minutes). 11C-Methionine PET is a valuable tool in neuro-oncology for identifying primary brain tumors, metastases, recurrence, in radiotherapy planning, and in assessing responses to therapy. It also has applications in studying myocardial infarction, hyperparathyroidism, squamous cell head and neck cancer, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma .
