L-Carnitine HCl, or L-Carnitine Hydrochloride, is a supplement form of the amino acid L-carnitine. L-carnitine plays a crucial role in the body's energy production process by facilitating the transport of long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria for β-oxidation, which is essential for energy generation .
L-Carnitine HCl is used to increase L-carnitine levels in individuals with naturally low levels due to certain genetic diseases or disorders. It is also used for a variety of conditions, including heart and vascular diseases, kidney disease, and male infertility, among others. Notably, it has been suggested to improve exercise tolerance in people with chest pain, heart failure, and high levels of cholesterol or lipids in the blood .
Supplementation with L-carnitine, particularly when combined with carbohydrates, has been shown to increase the total carnitine content in skeletal muscle. This can potentially enhance physical performance and recovery from exercise, although the effects on body composition may not be significant .
It is considered likely safe when taken orally for up to 12 months, but it can cause side effects such as stomach upset, heartburn, diarrhea, and seizures. Additionally, it may give the urine, breath, and sweat a "fishy" odor. There are precautions and warnings for certain populations, including pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and individuals with hypothyroidism or a history of seizures .
