Product Description

Product Description

Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), also known as lauryl sulfate, is a widely used anionic surfactant with the chemical formula C12H25NaO4S. It is a strong ionic detergent that is highly denaturing and effective at disrupting protein-protein interactions, especially when combined with heat . SDS is commonly used in various applications due to its excellent emulsifying, foaming, wetting, and dispersing properties.

Properties of SDS:

  • SDS is a white or pale yellow powder or liquid with a slightly greasy odor.
  • It is soluble in water, with the ability to lower the surface tension of water solutions and emulsify oils.
  • SDS is not sensitive to alkalis and hard water, and it is compatible with both anionic and nonionic surfactants.
  • It is flammable and has irritant and allergenic properties.
  • Upon combustion, it can release toxic gases .

Applications of SDS:

  • SDS is used as a foaming agent in products like toothpaste and shampoo.
  • It serves as an emulsifier in various industrial applications.
  • It is also used as an auxiliary agent in the textile industry, as well as in electroplating and other chemical industries.
  • In biochemistry, SDS is used in a technique called SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) for the separation of proteins based on their molecular weights .
