Pseudomonas
Pseudomonas is a genus of aerobic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped, and motile bacteria that are chemoorganotrophic microbes, catalase-positive, and utilize polyalcohols, amino acids, and organic acids as carbon sources . They belong to the class γ-proteobacteria, order Pseudomonadales, and family Pseudomonadaceae, containing more than 191 species . Pseudomonas species are known for their diversity and ubiquity, including several rod-shaped, Gram-negative, aerobic microorganisms with simple nutritional requirements . They can be isolated from a broad range of environments, including soil, water, plants, and various food products such as fish, meat, milk, and dairy products .
Pseudomonas species are characterized by their ability to grow under a wide range of conditions and implement defense mechanisms to withstand harsh environmental conditions . They are nonacid fast, nonsporulating, and uncapsulated, with pili on their bacterial surface . Some strains can produce slime, composed of glycolipoprotein and polysaccharide of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) . The genus includes both saprophytic and pathogenic species, with P. aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Pseudomonas putida being major pathogenic species .
Pseudomonas species have beneficial roles in various sectors, including agriculture, waste degradation, oil refineries, textile products, pulp and paper, mining, and explosive industries . They are used in the production of compounds such as vanillin, rhamnolipids, protease, lipase, and biopigments . Rhamnolipids, in particular, are glycolipids produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and are used in the food industry for their antimicrobial activity and physicochemical properties, as well as for emulsion stabilization and extending shelf life .
Pseudomonas species also play a role in sustainable agriculture as biocontrol agents, plant growth-promoting agents, and in the management of biotic and abiotic stress . They are known for their ability to tolerate heavy metal toxicity and can be used in the remediation of metal-contaminated soil
