Paroxetine hydrochloride, commonly known as Paroxetine HCL, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat a variety of mental health conditions. It is effective in managing major depressive disorder, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the vasomotor symptoms of menopause. Additionally, it is used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and is available under various brand names, including Paxil and Sereupin.
The drug works by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain, which helps to improve mood and alleviate symptoms of the aforementioned conditions. It is generally well-tolerated, but side effects can include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, sleep disturbances, and sexual dysfunction. Paroxetine has a boxed warning for an increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults, especially during the initial few months of treatment.
Paroxetine is metabolized in the liver primarily by the cytochrome P450 isoenzyme CYP2D6, and to a lesser extent by CYP3A4. Genetic variations in these enzymes can affect the metabolism of paroxetine, leading to altered drug levels and potential changes in efficacy and side effects. It is important to follow the prescribed dosage and consult with a healthcare provider for proper use, especially in cases of chronic use or when combining with other medications.
