Tilmicosin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic derived from tylosin, which is used in veterinary medicine for the treatment of respiratory diseases in animals, particularly in cattle and pigs. It has a similar antibacterial spectrum to tylosin but with enhanced activity against certain bacteria such as Pasteurella multocida and Pasteurella haemolitica .
The primary mechanism of action of tilmicosin involves binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, which inhibits protein synthesis and leads to the death of the bacterial cell. This effect is specific to the bacteria and does not significantly impact the host animal's cells .
Tilmicosin is administered to cattle by a single subcutaneous injection at a dosage of 10 mg/kg for the treatment of bacterial pneumonia. It is important to note that the drug should not be administered intravenously or intramuscularly due to its potential toxicity. In pigs, tilmicosin can be added to medicated feed and water for the control of swine respiratory disease associated with pathogens such as Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, P. multocida, and Haemophilus parasuis
