Minoxidil, with the CAS number 38304-91-5, is a medication that was initially developed as an oral antihypertensive agent to treat severe hypertension. It functions as a potent vasodilator, acting as an opener of vascular smooth muscle ATP-dependent K+ (KATP) channels, which leads to the relaxation of the cell membrane and subsequent decrease in blood pressure.
However, it is widely recognized for its unexpected side effect of promoting hair growth, which has led to its topical formulation for treating various types of hair loss. Topical minoxidil is currently a mainstay therapy for androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and is also used off-label for other hair loss conditions such as alopecia areata and female pattern hair loss. The exact mechanism by which minoxidil promotes hair growth is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve the stimulation of blood supply to the hair follicles, extension of the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle, and direct effects on follicular cells.
Minoxidil is available in different concentrations and forms, including 2% and 5% topical solutions and foams. It is typically applied topically to the scalp and requires consistent use to maintain effects. The 5% concentration is generally more effective but may also come with a higher risk of side effects such as skin irritation and unwanted hair growth in other areas
