protocatechuic acid CAS 99-50-3 Food Additives Nutrition
Protocatechuic acid (PCA), also known as 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, is a naturally occurring phenolic compound that is widely distributed in various foods, herbs, and plants. It is found in pigmented onion scales, hibiscus, carrots, mushrooms, and fruits of Ficus species, among others. PCA is a gray to brown crystalline powder that discolors in air, with a boiling point of 410°C at 760 mmHg and a melting point of 221°C. It is soluble in ethanol and ether and slightly soluble in water at a ratio of 1:50. PCA is amphoteric and incompatible with strong acids and bases.
PCA exhibits a broad range of pharmacological properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antitumor, antibacterial, antidiabetic, and antiapoptotic activities. It has been studied for its potential value in the prevention and treatment of diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, and atherosclerosis. Notably, PCA can play dual-directional roles in the regulation of many pharmacological activities; for example, it can act as both an antioxidant and an oxidant, and it may stimulate both cell apoptosis and proliferation. The pharmacological action and safety of PCA are critically dependent on the dose used.
