Avermectins are a class of drugs known for their anthelmintic and insecticidal properties, derived from a 16-membered lactone ring. They are naturally occurring fermentation products of the soil bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis. Avermectins are composed of eight different structures, divided into four major components (A1a, A2a, B1a, and B2a) and four minor components (A1b, A2b, B1b, and B2b). Notable examples include ivermectin, abamectin, doramectin, eprinomectin, moxidectin, and selamectin.
