Feature:
Pullulan is a kind of extracellular water-soluble mucous polysaccharide similar to glucan and xanthan gum produced by the fermentation of Aureobasidium pullulans. It is a special microbial polysaccharide discovered by R. Bauer in 1938. The polysaccharide is a linear polysaccharide formed by the polymerization of repeating units of maltotriose linked by α-1,4 glycosidic bonds through α-1,6 glycosidic bonds. It has been widely used in medicine, food, light industry, chemical industry and petroleum, etc. In the field of cosmetics, pullulan is still used in cosmetics. The current pullulan, because it has a lot of adhesion, is also used as an additive in makeup cosmetics. It is more effective than hyaluronic acid. The acid is still very similar, and has good solubility, so it is easy to dissolve in cold water, can have a certain sense of lubrication, and give people a smooth feeling in cosmetics.
Pullulan has the following applications/functions:
Adhesion, film-forming
1. Compared with general polysaccharides, pullulan has obvious adhesion properties and is easy to adhere to the skin surface. Because the polysaccharide has good water solubility, dispersibility, film-forming properties, hygroscopicity and non-toxicity, it can be used as a viscous additive in cosmetics; in terms of price, it is much cheaper than hyaluronic acid for similar purposes. But its effect is similar to that of hyaluronic acid. The molecules of pullulan have a linear structure. Therefore, compared with other polysaccharides, the aqueous solution of pullulan has lower viscosity and is not easy to form colloids. It is a neutral solution with strong adhesion. Pullulan has good solubility and can be quickly dissolved in cold water, and the solution is stable for a long time without "aging", and is not easily affected by pH or various salts. This is beneficial to use in different cosmetic formulations. Very good compatibility.
2. Pullulan film has lower air permeability than other polymer films. Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc. are almost completely impermeable, but it has greater moisture permeability. Figure 2 shows the comparison of oxygen permeability of different films. Therefore, pullulan film has excellent properties such as anti-oxidation, isolation of static electricity, dust, and moisture retention, and is suitable for use in cosmetics to protect the skin from external damage. The film also has a certain tensile strength, and it can stretch the skin and remove wrinkles when used in creams. In addition, the amount of pullulan added in the film-forming components of cosmetics is 3~15%. This mask is easy to remove and clean, can effectively remove dead cells on the skin surface and deeply clean the skin.
