Calcium lactate is an organic calcium salt and is known for its role in various applications across different industries. It is used in medical and nutritional fields for the prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency diseases such as osteoporosis, tetany, rickets, and for calcium supplementation in children, pregnant and lactating women, menopausal women, and the elderly .
In the construction industry, calcium lactate pentahydrate has been utilized as a substrate in microbial self-healing concrete. It provides organic carbon for bacteria like Bacillus pseudofirmus and Bacillus cohnii to precipitate calcium carbonate, thereby increasing concrete strength and aiding in the remediation of cracks . The bacteria metabolize calcium lactate to produce calcium carbonate, which fills in micro-cracks and enhances the concrete's mechanical properties . Studies have shown that this biomineralization process can increase the compressive strength of concrete significantly .
Calcium lactate is also used as a buffer in peritoneal dialysis solutions, where it helps maintain the pH of the solution. However, more physiologic solutions are now using bicarbonate as the buffer to reduce harm to peritoneal cells .
In terms of rheological properties, calcium hydroxylapatite-carboxymethylcellulose (CaHA-CMC) gels, which may contain calcium lactate, are studied for their potential use in dermal fillers. The rheological analysis of these gels can provide insights into their clinical applications .
