Product name: Cabergolin
CAS No: 81409-90-
Cabergolin is a selective dopamine receptor agonist that primarily targets the D2 receptors in the brain. It is a synthetic ergoline derivative used to treat conditions related to excessive prolactin secretion, such as hyperprolactinemia and prolactinomas. Cabergolin appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, is highly lipophilic, and is typically administered in oral tablet form. It is known for its long half-life, which allows for convenient dosing regimens, usually requiring only a few doses per week.
Application and Effect
Cabergolin is most commonly prescribed to manage disorders related to hyperprolactinemia, such as infertility, galactorrhea (abnormal milk production), and certain pituitary tumors (prolactinomas) that cause an overproduction of prolactin. By acting on dopamine D2 receptors, Cabergolin inhibits the secretion of prolactin from the anterior pituitary gland, leading to normalized levels of this hormone in the body. This reduction in prolactin levels can restore normal reproductive function in women and men, improve menstrual regularity, and alleviate symptoms like lactation. In addition to its use in hyperprolactinemia, Cabergolin has been used off-label for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). In Parkinson's disease, it helps by stimulating dopamine receptors, thereby improving motor control and reducing symptoms of tremors and rigidity. For RLS, Cabergolin's dopaminergic effects help reduce the uncomfortable urges to move the legs, providing relief from this condition. Cabergolin is often preferred over other dopamine agonists due to its extended duration of action, which allows for less frequent dosing, and its relatively favorable side effect profile. While generally well-tolerated, it can cause mild to moderate side effects such as nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. In rare cases, long-term use of Cabergolin has been associated with cardiac valve fibrosis, particularly in patients receiving high doses for extended periods. Therefore, regular monitoring is recommended in patients using Cabergolin long-term.
