Maduramicin Ammonium is a potent polyether ionophore antibiotic derived from the actinomycete Actinomadura rubra. It is primarily used in veterinary medicine for the prevention and treatment of coccidiosis, a disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Eimeria, particularly in poultry.
Chemical Properties:
Mechanism of Action: Maduramicin Ammonium forms complexes with monovalent cations, particularly sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), and calcium (Ca2+), with a higher affinity for K+ than Na+. This action promotes the transport of these cations across the cell membrane, increasing osmotic pressure within the coccidia. This inhibition of certain mitochondrial functions, such as substrate oxidation and ATP hydrolysis, leads to cell death in the protozoa.
Spectrum of Activity: It is effective against a range of gram-positive bacteria and exhibits a broad-spectrum of anticoccidial activity against the most frequently occurring Eimeria species. It is also active against Cryptosporidium and Treponema.
Usage in Veterinary Medicine: Maduramicin Ammonium is used to combat coccidiosis in poultry. It is typically administered as a feed additive. The recommended dose in feed is 5-7 ppm (mg/kg) for chickens and turkeys, with a withdrawal period of 5 days before slaughter.
