Tamsulosin hydrochloride is a medication belonging to the class of drugs known as alpha-adrenergic blockers, specifically targeting the alpha1A and alpha1D adrenergic receptors. It is primarily used to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate.
Mechanism of Action: Tamsulosin works by selectively blocking the alpha1A adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck. This blockade leads to relaxation of the smooth muscle, which in turn reduces the resistance in the urethra and improves urine flow. The result is a decrease in the common symptoms of BPH, such as difficulty starting urination, weak urine stream, and frequent urination.
Indications:
Dosage and Administration: The typical starting dose of tamsulosin hydrochloride is 0.4 mg once daily, taken orally. The dose can be adjusted based on the patient's response and tolerability, with a maximum recommended dose of 0.8 mg per day. It is usually taken at the same time each day, with or without food.
