Chlorogenic acid CAS 327-97-9 Food Additives Nutrition
Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is a polyphenol compound found in various plants, including green coffee beans, apples, pears, eggplant, blueberries, tomatoes, strawberries, and potatoes. It is most commonly supplemented in the form of green coffee extract. CGA has a variety of potential effects on health and is most notably used to reduce blood pressure and weight. Recent studies have indicated that CGA may also lower blood sugar levels, improve mood, and help with infections.
The mechanism of action of CGA includes inhibiting the enzyme alpha-glucosidase, which is responsible for breaking down carbohydrates, thereby reducing the uptake of carbohydrates and glucose during digestion. CGA also has a mild psychostimulatory effect, about one-third of caffein, mediated by its breakdown products, caffeic acid and m-coumaric acid. Other potential mechanisms include inhibiting 11-βHSD1, an enzyme involved in making hormones that raise blood pressure, and activating the GABAa receptor, resulting in reduced levels of anxiety.
CGA is also known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, which may contribute to its potential health benefits. It may help control blood sugar levels, aid in weight loss, improve mood and cognitive function, and assist with bacterial infections. However, there is insufficient evidence for some of these benefits, and common sources may cause allergies and side effects similar to caffein. CGA may also interact with medication for blood pressure and diabetes.
