Rosuvastatin Calcium, also known by the brand name CRESTOR, is a selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, which is the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. This medication is used for the treatment of high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in certain patients.
Mechanism of Action: Rosuvastatin Calcium works by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase in the liver, which in turn reduces the production of cholesterol in the liver. This leads to a decrease in the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol, and triglycerides in the blood. It also increases the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), which is considered the "good" cholesterol.
Indications: It is indicated for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia (IIa type, including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia) or mixed dyslipidemia (IIb type) in adults who are not adequately controlled with diet and other non-pharmacological treatments. It is also used in the treatment of homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, either as an adjunct to diet and other lipid-lowering measures, such as LDL apheresis, or when such measures are unavailable.
