Indications: Treatment of iron deficiency anemia in patients who have an intolerance to, or unsatisfactory response from, oral iron therapy, and in adult patients with non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease. Also used to treat iron deficiency and improve exercise capacity in adult patients with NYHA class II or III heart failure.
Mechanism of Action:
Ferric carboxymaltose is a colloidal iron (III) hydroxide in complex with carboxymaltose, a carbohydrate polymer that releases iron. It is a macromolecular ferric hydroxide carbohydrate complex that allows for controlled delivery of iron within the cells of the reticuloendothelial system and subsequent delivery to the iron-binding proteins ferritin and transferrin, with minimal risk of release of large amounts of ionic iron in the serum.
Pharmacokinetics:
Dosage and Administration:
The drug is administered intravenously and can deliver a replenishment dose of up to 1000 mg of iron during a minimum administration time of ≤15 minutes.
Safety and Tolerability:
Commonly reported adverse reactions include headache, dizziness, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, rash, and injection-site reactions. It is generally well tolerated in clinical trials.
Storage Conditions:
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
