Phenylethyl Resorcinol (PER), also known as Symwhite 377, is a highly effective skin lightening ingredient used in the personal care industry due to its potent inhibitory activity against tyrosinase, a key enzyme involved in melanogenesis . It has been clinically proven to be significantly more effective than other whitening agents, such as kojic acid and arbutin, with a high efficacy even at concentrations as low as 0.5% .

However, the practical use of PER is challenged by its chemical instability, particularly its sensitivity to UV light, which can lead to degradation and reddish discoloration of products . To address this, various strategies have been explored, including the incorporation of PER into nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC) and smartLipids, which have shown to enhance chemical stability and tyrosinase activity . The use of UV blockers, antioxidants, and chelating agents has been investigated to prevent discoloration and stabilize PER. Specifically, Tinosorb S and Oxynex ST liquid as UV blockers, along with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and phytic acid as chelating agents, have been found to be effective in preventing discoloration under test conditions .

In a study aimed at improving PER's stability and delivery, nanoliposomes were utilized to serve as a skin penetration enhancer for skin whitening . The encapsulation of PER in nanoliposomes not only improved its solubility and stability but also enhanced its bioavailability and transdermal delivery . The development of these nanocarriers has shown promise in overcoming the limitations associated with PER's poor aqueous solubility and light instability, offering a potential solution for the effective and safe use of PER in cosmetic formulations .
