Glutathione (GSH) is a tripeptide consisting of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, and is known as the most abundant low molecular weight thiol compound synthesized in cells .It plays a critical role in protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining redox homeostasis, which is essential for the cell's functionality and viability .Glutathione is synthesized in the liver and is involved in various biological processes, including detoxification of carcinogens and harmful foreign compounds, as well as acting as an antioxidant to protect against free radicals and peroxides .
GSH is also involved in the regulation of the cell cycle and is a co-factor for many cytoplasmic enzymes .It can exist in either a reduced (GSH) or oxidized (GSSG) state, and maintaining the optimal GSH:GSSG ratio is critical for cell survival .Imbalances in GSH levels have been associated with a variety of diseases such as cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, cystic fibrosis, and aging .
Glutathione can be measured using various methods, including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which allows for the identification and quantification of different forms of thiols in biological samples .Measurement of GSH is important as it serves as a highly sensitive indicator of cell functionality and viability, and its depletion in humans is linked to numerous disease states, including cancer, neurodegenerative, and cardiovascular diseases .
Supplementation with glutathione has been shown to improve sperm motility in infertile men and has potential benefits in reducing neurotoxicity associated with certain chemotherapy drugs .However, supplementation can be challenging due to poor gastrointestinal absorption, and it is often necessary to administer glutathione through intramuscular injections to achieve effective levels
