Pitavastatin is a potent and selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate, a rate-limiting step in the biosynthesis of cholesterol. It is used in adults together with diet to lower blood levels of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL), to increase levels of "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL), and to lower triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood). Certain brand forms of pitavastatin can also be used in adults and children at least 8 years old with an inherited condition that causes high levels of bad cholesterol.
Pitavastatin is available under brand names such as Livalo and Zypitamag, and it comes in oral tablet forms of different dosages, including 1 mg, 2 mg, and 4 mg. It is part of the drug class known as statins, which are widely used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia.
The drug can cause side effects such as muscle pain, liver problems, and increased blood sugar levels. There is also a risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis, which can lead to kidney failure. It is important to consult with a healthcare provider before taking pitavastatin, particularly if you have liver disease or are taking other medications that may interact with it.
