Nicarbazin is a synthetic anticoccidial drug that has been widely used in the poultry industry to control coccidiosis, a disease caused by protozoa of the Eimeria genus that can lead to significant losses in poultry flocks. The drug is particularly effective in young broiler chickens, where it is used to prevent the disease rather than to treat established infections .
Nicarbazin is an equal molar complex of 4,4′-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC) and 2-hydroxy-4,6-dimethylpyrimidine (HDP). It has a broad-spectrum activity against various Eimeria species and is believed to act by inhibiting certain enzymes and disrupting the parasites' life cycle . The drug is rapidly separated into its two components after ingestion, with DNC being the marker residue for nicarbazin.
