Neomycin Sulfate is an antibiotic obtained from the metabolic products of the actinomycete Streptomyces fradiae. It is a member of the aminoglycoside class of drugs, which are known for their bactericidal activity against a range of bacterial organisms.
Description: Neomycin Sulfate Tablets, USP, are for oral administration and contain neomycin in a dosage form of tablets. The structural formula of neomycin sulfate can be represented as: 0-2, 6-diamino-2, 6-dideoxy-α D-glucopyranosyl-(1→3)-0-β-D-ribofuranosyl-(1→5)-0-[2,6-diamino-2, 6-dideoxy-α-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→4)]-2-deoxy-D-streptamine .
Indications and Usage: Neomycin Sulfate Tablets are indicated for use in reducing the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintaining the effectiveness of antibacterial drugs. They should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by susceptible bacteria. The tablets are also used as adjunctive therapy in the suppression of the normal bacterial flora of the bowel, such as preoperative preparation of the bowel, and in hepatic coma (portal-systemic encephalopathy) by reducing the ammonia-forming bacteria in the intestinal tract.
