Sulpiride is an antipsychotic medication that belongs to the class of drugs known as benzamides. It is primarily used for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Sulpiride works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, which helps to alleviate the symptoms of psychosis such as hallucinations, delusions, and disordered thinking.
Mechanism of Action: Sulpiride is a selective antagonist of the D2 subtype of dopamine receptors. It has a higher affinity for the D2 receptors than for the D1 receptors, which may contribute to its lower risk of extrapyramidal side effects (EPS) compared to some other antipsychotic medications. Additionally, sulpiride has been shown to have some affinity for serotonin (5-HT2) receptors, which may contribute to its efficacy in treating negative symptoms of schizophrenia and improving cognitive function.
