Product Description

Product Description

Benzylpenicillin sodium, also known as penicillin G sodium, is a natural antibiotic derived from the Penicillium notatum mold. It is a white or almost white, crystalline powder that is soluble in water and has a molecular formula of C16H17N2NaO4S with a relative molecular mass of 356.4 .

Benzylpenicillin sodium is classified as an antibiotic and is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is particularly effective against Gram-positive bacteria such as streptococci, pneumococci, and non-penicillinase-producing Staphylococcus species. It is also active against some Gram-negative bacteria and some spirochetes like Treponema pallidum, which causes syphilis .

The antibiotic works by inhibiting the synthesis of bacterial cell walls, leading to the death of the bacteria. It is important to note that benzylpenicillin sodium is not active against bacteria that produce beta-lactamase, an enzyme that can break down the antibiotic .

In terms of storage, benzylpenicillin sodium should be kept in a tightly closed container, protected from light, and stored at a temperature not exceeding 25°C. It is hygroscopic and is readily decomposed by acid, alkalis, and oxidizing agents. Even in the absence of light, benzylpenicillin sodium is gradually degraded on exposure to a humid atmosphere, with the decomposition being faster at higher temperatures .

For sterile use, benzylpenicillin sodium must comply with additional requirements for sterility and endotoxin levels, making it suitable for parenteral administration or other sterile applications.
