Behenic acid, scientifically known as docosanoic acid, is a saturated fatty acid with the chemical formula C22H44O2. It is a waxy solid that is white to cream or yellow in color and is found in various plant oils, particularly in jamba oil, mustard seed oil, and rapeseed oil. Behenic acid has a melting point of approximately 79.95 °C to 81 °C and is poorly soluble in water but soluble in organic solvents like ethanol and ether.
This fatty acid is used in the manufacturing of cosmetics, waxes, plasticizers, and as a chemical intermediate. It also serves as an emulsifying agent in cosmetics and is recognized as generally safe by the FDA for use in food products as a texturizer.
In terms of environmental impact, behenic acid is considered to have a low potential for bioconcentration in aquatic organisms, with an estimated bioconcentration factor (BCF) of 3. It is expected to be immobile in soil due to its estimated Koc value and is likely to undergo biodegradation in both soil and water environments.
Behenic acid is also known to occur naturally in many essential oils and is a minor constituent of most seed fats, animal milk fats, and marine animal oils. It is used in the production of lubricating oils and to retard solvent evaporation in paint removers. In cosmetics, it is used as an emulsifying agent and is listed in the Cosmetic Ingredient Review.
