Name:Thymol
Thymol, chemically known as 2-isopropyl-5-methylphenol, is a colorless crystalline monoterpene phenol that is predominantly found in various thyme species . It has been used for centuries in traditional medicine and is known for its diverse pharmacological properties, which include antioxidant, free radical scavenging, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antispasmodic, antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic, and antitumor activities . Thymol is one of the most important dietary constituents in thyme species and has shown therapeutic actions against a range of diseases, including cardiovascular, neurological, rheumatological, gastrointestinal, metabolic, and malignant conditions at both biochemical and molecular levels .
The effects of thymol are largely attributed to its anti-inflammatory properties, which work by inhibiting the recruitment of cytokines and chemokines, its antioxidant properties through the scavenging of free radicals, enhancing endogenous enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, and chelating metal ions, as well as its antihyperlipidemic effects by increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels and decreasing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels .
Thymol and thyme essential oil have been utilized in traditional medicine for their expectorant properties and potential as anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and antiseptic agents . Recent studies have demonstrated additional properties such as antibiofilm, antifungal, antileishmanial, antiviral, and anticancer activities . Thymol is also used in the food industry for its flavoring and preservative properties, in commercial mosquito repellent formulations for their natural repellent effect, in aromatherapy, and in the treatment of headaches, coughs, and diarrhea
